Which came up in conversation the other day and my husband so rudely pointed out how old I am... And that made me sad. However there are some things in life that make me delightfully happy and that is costumes! So i thought I would share some more sneak peaks of our upcoming family themed Halloween costumes.

I'm so excited... And I think the pictures are pretty straightforward in terms of which characters in Alice in Wonderland the costumes pertain to. However, that being said. I enjoy the guessing game, so, as per my last post though... I'm going to leave it up to the viewers to guess which costumes you see here.

I still have 4 more Alice and Wonderland costumes to go and two of an entirely different theme to make. I need more hours in my day!
And typically those secret meetings are based around one theme... Costumes. I'm guilty of loving costumes and now that it's September what I want to know is who isn't thinking about their costumes for Halloween... Because I am... And if we're being perfectly honest. I have been... Ever since the realization that there is such a thing as Halloween (but I started asking my family what they wanted for costumes this year back in August... Because, seriously. Who can contain that excitement!)

So... They've decided on a theme and I'm so giddy... Because I am in the process of making costumes. I just finished my nephew Aydens costume and although this is just a sneak peak (I mean... You're going to have to wait for pictures come closer to the holiday season (I know... It's disappointing). But with this little sneak picture can anyone guess the theme (and no cheating... I know I've told almost everyone I see what the theme is... I love Halloween in a big way... And for that. I'm not going to apologize. Also... Just fair warning. Don't ever tell me you don't like Halloween... Because I will unfriend you!)

It's funny how nostalgia settles in when you least expect it. My nephew (by the way he's 8) posted a picture of himself and two of his siblings on the paddle board at the lake and I was so completely and utterly envious. I want to be at the lake!

I always want to be there... Playing kick the can, watching lightening bugs. Canoeing through the other side to the Bowen Mill. I miss it... But alas, apparently this is what is like to be an adult (rotten).

So anyway despite the fact that I'm incredibly sad that I can't be at the lake this year (cue listening to granddaddy's the crystal lake now)...I figured it's just as good a time as any to talk about an outfit that my mom recently got into altered couture. The theme was "Marilyn Monroe," and I got to help inspire this outfit (last summer... When I was visiting her at the lake... I think I've adequately conveyed how much I miss the lake... But just in case... I miss being at the lake). This is the magazine cover that we are featured in... Although please note that the cover is not our design.

At first my mom thought this would be a difficult challenge but I assured her it would be easy. We quickly went to salvation army and I found the perfect outfits to alter (don't you just get a vision of what could be with these... No!?

So anyway... I saw those dresses and was inspired... And conveyed said inspiration to my mom about how it should be a 50's beach theme that Marilyn Monroe would've worn... With my words alone... She didn't have any clue where I was going. So I had to draw a picture.

In the meantime... This was me at the lake last summer... I made myself a flower crown with the abundant Queens Anne lace that grows wild everywhere (love it!) Which reminds me I forgot to mention picking wildflowers, picking fruit, and lily pads and lotus flowers as other favorites from being at the lake. Sigh of sadness.
This particular friend has a side business of selling chocolate... She's a chocolatier... No scratch that... She's a dream maker!

Regardless... This past week she was in Chicago at a convention where she was presenting about how to use social media to help market and make sales (which is awesome by the way... And obviously I'm not the person to do that... I'm writing a blog instead of using snapchat... Clearly not hip in this area... But that's okay.)

So her request was simple. Could I make her a skirt with a hashtag on it... Also... I had less than a week... And she was presenting with a friend and could I make her one too... And me the person with a full time job that often works well over 40 hours a week said... Yeah of course. This is child's play, give me a real challenge! (And just to clarify... The conversation did not happen anything close to that...I said yes).

So this is what she got... And secretly (but less so now) I begged her to say something cheesy about how marketing via social media is even easier than clicking your Ruby red heels three times to get home. Hopefully that will make sense when you see the picture (and even more so if you know that I just might be one of the cheesiest people in the world... It works for me... Or at least it humors me!)

Love chocolate... Then check out her site. The peanut butter chocolate smoothie is a personal favorite... Although smoothie, the name itself, lends the idea that it's healthy. I'm going to stick with that assumption because it makes me feel better (even if I'm wrong!) www.mydcdsite.com/aschuler
I even somehow managed to convince my cousin to give me his little mermaid toy from McDonald's (I don't remember how... But I did. My skills of persuasion were better then).

I loved singing all of the songs... Now I'd rather not be part of your world... Just mine, but alas as you grow up that's not how things work. Regardless. A friend asked me if I would help her with her daughters birthday party... And I'm not sure whose idea it was (it was probably mine... Because I'm like that). But we decided that all of the little kiddos should have mermaid skirts to wear. I don't have any pictures of the kiddos wearing them... Because I'm the strange childless adult at the party (awkward). But I did make a special skirt for her daughter. She got the blue one with scales whereas all of the other girls got a plain green one.

It was fun to make dreams reality. The mermaid theme was her daughters request after all!
And it's fitting because I should have known better than to buy more Melody Miller fabric... Because it's the best!
This is another dress for a friend. She grew up in Lamar and she reminds me of all things western... And I know that this dress doesn't exactly fit that bill... It's my take on modern hip western wear.

He convinced me to see a terrible couple of other people (I'm so embarrassed by it that I'm not even going to mention who it was... So bad, seriously). Sadly I never had that opportunity again... But as I'm a big fan of his music I still listen... So say yes.

The next dress I made was for another friend for her birthday in February. She loves dogs (and I try to stick with themes... Because I'm a huge dork). So anyhow... I found this adorable pug fabric and picked the rest to make this adorable dress. I love it... And as of this point I still haven't given her this... Although it's been nicely wrapped up for her for months now! It's not just that I secretly adore this dress and want to keep it... After all it's a bit snug on me because I made it to fit her!
Regardless. I've had a busy year making things. It's been my goal to make hand made gifts this year... And needless to say, I'm behind on my gift giving. But of the gifts I've completed. I'm super pleased with all of them! Hopefully the recipients feel the same way!

The first of my endeavors was based off of some earrings that I picked up from the Alzheimer's Association's Memories in the Making show in 2014. The bird nests were paintings that were in the show... And I loved them and knew that they would be the perfect present.

Then... As luck would have it I found this beautiful broach... And then a concept came together (because that's how I operate!)

So I had my basis and theme and I found fabric to coordinate and used a Collette pattern to come up with the following dress.

It makes me as happy as the song from Willy Wonka about pure imagination. Go ahead... Sing it... Remember how happy that made you! Well this skirt makes me feel the same way. This is another gift for a friend... And I absolutely adore Melody Miller fabrics and I splurged and came up with this lovely little combination!

I based this idea of happy go lucky childhood off of the necklace. The necklace is a copy of a painting that was in the Alzheimer's Association's Memories in the Making at show for 2014... It needed a fun and happy outfit to go along with it!
This was another project for a friend of mine. She had bought this dress... But it was so incredibly full that it wasn't very flattering. I told her that I could do something with it that she would love. The finished piece looks nothing like the original... In fact I probably have enough fabric left to make another dress like this if I wanted to!
Okay. By the way background music should be comic strip by the ghost of a saber tooth tiger... Because it's ridiculous and fun and ties in with my next project.

This is my second version of this dress. At my previous job we hosted an annual event called super hero slushie salute. I made it a requirement for staff to come in some sort of super hero attire and I let a friend of mine borrow my dress... And she fell in love. But I made mine quickly without much attention to detail and I wanted to be able to make her a nicer version. See my version below:

Then this is the version I made for my friend, notice the careful planning to centralize the logo! And I couldn't help myself... I wanted to add the bright accents to make the comic book feel more present in the yoke but subtle.
"The sun is up, I'm so happy I could scream, and there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be than here with you." I know that The Cure is known for depressing music, but some of my favorite music of theirs is really upbeat and ridiculously happy (this song included). So I honestly can't say that this song inspired my card. In all reality I just like this image from A Day from Daisies, and I really just wanted to color it and make her hair mint green (because I would love to have such fabulously colored hair myself...but I have a respectable job, and will have to wait until I'm much, much older before I will ever be able to pull that off...as I like to say, when I go gray, i will play (and more specifically I will play with hair color like mint green and more!))

So that just about sums up this card, I really wanted the main character to have mint green hair. This card was designed for Dutch Paper Crafts and features an embossing folder by Lifestyle Crafts called Tile. I think this embossing folder is a really nice one, and works well for a basic "wallpaper" background. I used some plaid paper to balance and offset the background (because one color backgrounds are really boring to me, and I need more out of life than just one color). I still thought it needed something and so then I added the silver embellishments, and with that thought the card looked complete.

Thanks for visiting me on my blog, and don't forget to check out Dutch Paper Crafts as they have a variety of items to choose from!
And I LOVE this song, because it's a LOT of fun. "Everywhere there's lots of piggies, living piggy lives. You can see them out for dinner with their piggy wives."

This card was designed for Dutch Paper Crafts, I'm a part of their design team. This group of cards was definitely challenging for me, and this is one of the cards that I contemplated what to do with it for far longer than I should admit to. Featured in this card is the embossing folders from Lifestyle Crafts called 'Tile'.

You can see in the background of the card that I used one of the embossing folders from this package to create this card. To me this embossing folder reminds me of wedding quilts...but it was still a tough concept for me to tie together with a clever theme. So instead i eventually decided to use the cute little female piggy in her cute dress and bloomers, and hoping that it would look okay together. I think it does (let me know if you feel differently!) I felt the embossing folders didn't stand out enough without embellishing them (likely due to the paper I used). Again, you can see that I used the embossing folders to make a concave design as opposed to convex, so to help this pop, I colored in the concave shapes with silver on the pink, and orange on the yellow to make it a bit more noticeable.

The pig is from A Day for Daisies and was colored by copic markers...at this point i think it's pretty clear that I'm a big fan of A Day for Daisies images. I think that they're a lot of fun and since it takes me time to come up with my own drawings I often use her images as they are whimsical and fun!
katkohanefinchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16083549142283743806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7066192463205687304.post-64555147526869142462014-02-28T00:00:00.006-08:002014-02-28T00:00:13.268-08:00Mermaid Avenue and Ingrid BergmanSo the blog title probably is confusing...Mermaid Avenue is an album by Billy Bragg and Wilco in which they sang the lyrics of Woody Guthrie's songs that had yet to be published. So Ingrid Bergman is the title of one of those songs (and also an actress). Anyhow, the mermaid in this reminds me of some of the lyrics from the song and the fact that the album is called Mermaid Avenue.

So the concept again is incredibly simple. I like to use my scrap paper, and the swirls were from some letters that I had cut out for a friend (so they were the negative pieces and were left over). I thought the swirls matched well with the embossing folder that I used. This is an embossing folder by Lifestyle Crafts and is in the Lattice Package. As discussed in another blog, these particular embossing folders remind me of vintage swimmers, etc. So it was natural to combine the swirl negative image, the mermaid, and the embossing folder to create this type of design. I wanted the card to have that vintage feel, so I used some silver paper for the embossing folder that has the feel of old glitter that has aged to get to that vintage looking color to it. Then the rest was just combining everything to work out together just right and of course some embellishments were used to simulate silver bubbles from the mermaid swimming.

The embossing folders are from Dutch Paper Crafts, which I am a design team member of. The image was from A Day for Daisies, and was colored with copic markers.
My inspiration for this card was the song "Lake Michigan" by Rogue Wave. As far as music groups go, I pretty much like all of their songs and since my family is from Michigan and I spent many summers camping in Holland and going to Lake Michigan this seemed like a good way to relate to the work that I'm creating and make it more personal and meaningful (in that it brings back pleasant memories that nobody would ever be able to see in the card itself).

This card concept is incredibly simple. My main goal was to create a scene of a girl at the lake. The paper was pieced together and the bottom piece was supposed to simulate sand, then water, then sky. So the blues were supposed to be a gradient from light to dark. The embossing folder was from Lifestyle Crafts and is from the Lattice group. I am on the design team for Dutch Paper Crafts, where you can purchase these embossing folders. I'm not sure why, but the lattice embossing folders reminded me of vintage designs that remind me of swimming (and I'm thinking specifically of the movie "How To Make An American Quilt" and some of the images from there that made me think of that). So it seemed natural to tie them back to a card based off a water theme.

The girl image is from A Day for Daisies and was colored using copic markers...I felt this image also went along with the theme of vintage swimmers, and really helped tie the card together, and the concept reminded me of the days I used to spend at Lake Michigan playing at the beach (although jumping in the waves was always much more fun than being on land).

So with that in mind, I actually picked out the image I wanted to use for this card, and from there set forth on the rest of the design. Some of you may or may not be familiar with the song by The Monkees called "Teeny Tiny Gnome," if you're not familiar with it, I'm not necessarily going to recommend that you become familiar with it (unless you're an incredibly cheesy person who likes to listen to and sing cheesy songs...in which case, knock yourself out!) What you need to know is that at the end of the song the gnome says that "the party is over, please come back in a thousand years." Apparently gnome parties aren't what we thought they were cracked up to be as he was playing solitare and then basically tells us to get lost...despite the fact that this song seems to be contrary to popular concepts of gnomes being friendly (or at least that's my concept of gnomes)...anyhow it still worked for my inspiration.

I am on the design team for Dutch Paper Crafts and with this card I used the Lifestyle Crafts embossing folders in the Chain package. This one reminds me more of a basket weave...and basket weaves tend to remind me of country simplicity (and I tried really hard to come up with a concept that would fit this theme better, but this was the closest I could come up with due to my own personal preferences...another reason why you know I'm not a real designer because I refuse to give up on my ideas of what is acceptable, and I just don't care that much for traditional country things). So I used another image from A Day for Daisies and set up a simple background to tell a story of a Gnome working hard to collect mushrooms and bring them to and from where he's working to his home. The paper was scrap from holiday books that I made for my nieces and nephews a few years ago, but i thought it worked with the concept. The image was of course colored with copic markers.

Have fun getting creative and coming up with new concepts!
So naturally whenever I think of Giraffes, I think of Geoffrey from Toy's R' Us (because that's the kid in me)...and I also think of work...but that's a longer story that doesn't actually relate to this card. I decided that for this embossing folder that I was going to use the giraffe image by A Day for Daisies, because it's cute and to be honest I really needed to come up with a design, and this seemed easy to me. So because it's a Giraffe, and Giraffes remind me of Geoffrey, I had this song stuck in my head the entire time (which really it is a fun song, you should listen to it).

So the concept, as mentioned earlier, was really that simple. I'm on the design team for Dutch Paper Crafts and this was created with an embossing folder from Lifestyle Crafts Chain package. You can see in the background is an embossed design made to look like a chain link fence. The brown paper was sanded down to help see the design better (and it looks better sanded in my opinion). The rest of the card was paper pieced together, and the image was colored with copic markers.
"I love rock and roll, so put another dime in the jukebox, baby"...thank you Joan Jett for being the inspiration behind this next card. I really wanted to draw a rocker chick...don't ask me why. It's just what I wanted to do (my mom had her reservations that maybe this was a bit too edgy for the design team...but I beg to differ.) I mean honestly, who wouldn't want to rock some star glasses along with a shirt that has a star on it...and the spikey blue hair...right on!

Rock chic apparel and accessories aside, this card was designed for Dutch Paper Crafts. I'm on their design team, and the embossing folders are really what I used to create this card and the entire concept. The embossing folders are by Lifestyle Crafts and are called Twinkle and they have two different cards in the pack, both which have stars...the copper paper shows the one version of a typical 5 pointed star, and the blue paper shows the other folder which is a 7 pointed star. So you can see that really this entire card is based off of the concept of a rock star.

Just a reminder that embossing folders can be versatile, you can use either side (so they can be convex or concave, I decided to use the 5 pointed star in a convex manner and the 7 pointed star is concave which I thought helped give more depth and interest to the card).

The image of the rock star was drawn by me using a few different photos as my inspiration. Have fun using this concept for any of your designs!
These pertain to my senses in that I really do love the concept of woodland animals (and let's be honest, as a theme that's actually pretty popular right now as well).

So my inspiration for this particular card was Tori Amos's song "Sorta Fairytale." I used a digital image by A Day for Daisies that I felt really encompassed how I envisioned this card turning out. I colored the image with copic markers and used some paper that I had leftover from other projects. The background wood image is the embossing folder that I received from Dutch Paper Crafts, as I'm lucky enough to be on their design team. I then created the foliage from cutting some paper that I already had and strategically placing the circles that i hand cut from the paper itself.

I LOVE the way that this card turned out, and I hope that inspires you to create something beautiful with these embossing folders and what you already have laying around leftover from previous projects.
And the man plays a beautiful whistle but he wears a prickly thistle"...thank you to the White Stripes for inspiration for my latest card. I really struggled with how to use the embossing folders that I received from Dutch Paper Crafts and as many of you are aware, music is often my inspiration for creating things (because on my own, I'm not all that creative...thanks to the left side of my brain being slightly more dominant!) Anyhow, I actually chose this grouping of items based off of this particular embossing folder (however, this certainly isn't the strongest piece that I created for this group of cards).

So for this card, I pondered over what to do for a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time before I finally came up with this concept of two fancily dressed hedgehogs who rather like each other. So the hedgehogs are drawn by me, and the paper used in the background is really just scrap paper that I had laying around that I pieced together to create a patchwork background. The greenish yellow heart is actually from paper that I used during my wedding (which was many, many years ago...yes, i still had that hanging around). I used the Lifestyle Crafts Woodland embossing folder (thanks to Dutch Paper Crafts for Supplying me with this folder). It is utilized on the greenish yellow heart as well as the brown in the background (which was sanded to show off the embossing design more). Lastly I used a Mushroom Border Die by C.C. Designs along the bottom of the card to help create an eclectic woodland card.
So...obviously music is the only way I can relate to the world...so this is a small little scrapbook that has been handmade (again...an obvious thank you to my mom for this suggestion and help in making the book). Anyhow...as I was saying...music. If you haven't guessed by now, then you likely don't know the song (as it is the title of my blog). No worries, there is always time for a formal education with what consists of "good" music by my definition...just continue to check out my blog (kidding of course). So this song is by none other than Queen...and I think it's very fitting. I first heard this song way back when I was still in High School...and just to clarify, the song was new to me...but not newly released. So at this point in the blog, I'm just going to have to give you the pass to start singing along, because honestly it's way too hard not to at this point. "BICYCLE, BICYCLE...I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride my bike. I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride it where I like!"

I am lucky to be on a design team for Dutch Paper Crafts...being on that design team is what makes these "paper thingies" possible (and apparently links me to my musical childhood as well...both of which I'm incredibly grateful for).
This book was made with the following: My mom's assistance, Memory Box Products such as Bicycle Built for Two (98545), and Resting Birds (98527); Cheery Lynn's Lace strip (B136); and I used a Fiskars punch for the pennants and some twine...and of course paper to create everything else!
"If you're small and on a perch, I've got a feeder for you to perch on...I like birds," thank you to Eels for such a fun song to listen and whistle to. I'd like to say that they are what inspired my card...however it would have been more fitting if I'd just named it after the Beetles "Blackbird" song...I only added colored birds at the suggestion of my sister...so many thanks to her because it did make this card much lovelier with the addition of more birds in a variety of colors.

So now that you know the background now when you see this image, you can sing both of these songs in the back of your head...and if you happen to be singing the song by the Eels...well, I'm not sure how at that point in your day you can't be having the best day ever...because that song is like magic...in that it makes you happy and simulates the feeling of having the best day ever. If it so happens that you choose to sing Blackbird by the Beetles...it's still a great day, just on a much more even-keeled laid back sort of way (which is equally good!)

This card was made for Dutch Paper Crafts...by this point I'm certain you all know that I am lucky enough to be on their design team.
Oddly enough as I sit here writing this post I am on vacation...it is Monday evening and today was a rainy day. Fortunately I enjoy rainy days, however I thought that the Carpenter's song title would also be a fitting title to the name of my card. Luckily they are my mom's favorite band, and so I am effectively paying homage to her with this card (which she encouraged me to do something completely different from what I did...but without that encouragement I would not have created this at all.)

This card was made for Dutch Paper Crafts...I am fortunate enough to be on their team, and although my work is quite different from the other team members, I am hoping to draw in a different crowd so that everyone can see different ideas on how they will be able to use the wonderful products that are offered there.

This card was made using the following: Puffy Clouds (98172) die by Memory box, as well as True Blue Stickles (SGG29052), and Lifestyle Crafts 'Sketchbook' Embossing Folder (EF0021). The digital image on the front is by Milk Coffee.
I'm super excited to have my first release for Dutch Paper Crafts and be a part of their design team. I had a lot of fun coming up with this design for them...albeit it is simple, however, the clown girl is a my own digital image, which you are welcome to save from this posting.
For this design I used scrap paper for the design, the digital image of the clown girl, which was drawn by me. As well as the following dies from Memory Box: Vintage Bicycle (98484), Resting Birds (98527), and Puffy Clouds (98172)
I LOVE Halloween...frankly there is no better Holiday to exist in the entire world (don't argue with me...trust me I'm right here). So anyhow...I run a Memory Care Community, and as I am the Brave Leader at such a place, I absolutely insist that my staff wear costumes on Halloween (and let's be honest...many other Holidays...or in our case, just random events throughout the year).

There will never be a day when I will say that costumes aren't appropriate (and if that day comes...something is terribly wrong and you should be concerned). So...most of these costumes featured below were designed by myself, and forced amicably (if there is such a thing) on my staff to wear...and let's be honest, they look pretty happy in the pictures, and you can tell when that's not genuine!

I stick with a Woodland Theme for my staff...it makes it easy for anyone to purchase a pair of wings and come to work with an affordable costume...and most Woodland Animals (real or mythical) are identifiable to the children who come in and Trick-or-Treat...and lastly, the residents love it. It's a fun theme that they can relate to, and laugh at (trust me...it's been worse...we've all been Strawberry Shortcake Characters before...and that's much harder to pull off...I will have to find pictures...one day I will.)
